Use Gmail to Become a Better Email Marketer

I want to start this post by giving props to Amy Porterfield and her awesome Podcast! If you haven’t checked it out yet, you definitely should.

It was actually Amy’s podcast with Jeff Walker that got me pumped about email marketing and inspired this post.

Jeff really stresses the importance of building your email list and I couldn’t agree more!

I wanted to find some examples of good email marketing copy so I decided to start signing up for some email lists. Good idea, right? Not so much.

Buzz after buzz kept coming in (I keep my phone on vibrate). I was being bombarded with emails. That was pretty annoying and I had to stop it before it got out of hand.

Google to the Rescue

So, where did I turn. Google, of course.

I was looking for a way to filter the emails into a folder. Seems pretty simple, right? Google kept leading me towards something called labels. I just wanted to get them into a folder. I was thoroughly confused.

I eventually did what every modern day web surfer has to do at some point. Stop scanning and start reading.

Enter Gmail’s Virtual Folders

I learned that labels are actually like virtual folders and when you label an email, it appears in this virtual folder.

Seems kind of silly, but there are actually some advantages to this approach. The main advantage is you can add more than one label to one message. Something you can’t really do with folders.

For example, if you wanted to create a label for “Marketing Subscriptions” and you also wanted to create a label for “My Favorites”, you could do that.

Then, you could apply both labels to an email and it would end up in both virtual folders.

Getting Started

Start by going to a few of your favorite marketer’s websites and opting into their email list.

You can start with Jeff’s. Click the image to go to his site and fill in your email address.

Now, go ahead and open up Gmail and follow the instructions to setup your label and filter.

1.) Click the “More” link on the left side of the screen.

2.) Click the “Create new label” link.

2_create_new_label

3.) Name your label and click “Create.”

4.) Select the messages you want to label and click the “More” button.

5.) Click the “Filter messages like these” link.

6.) Click the “Create filter with this search” link.

7.) Check the boxes I highlighted and click “Create filter”.

8.) Click the link to see your goldmine of email marketing messages.

And that’s it! Pretty easy, right?

Some of the lists may want you to confirm your email address. You should go ahead and do that now.

What was the Point of this?

There’s a goldmine of messages sitting in that folder. Make sure you set aside some time to go through them all.

Remember, these marketers are trying to convert you as a customer so they will provide some of their very best content to draw you in.

You should also use it to study what the experts are doing. Some of these marketers have been doing this for years. They know what works and what doesn’t. Leverage that!
